A study has looked at the effect of chewing gum on stress levels – and found that it can help significantly!
Forty participants performed tasks at different intensities whilst chewing gum or not chewing gum.
‘Before and after’ stress levels were measured using a mood scale and stress visual analogue scale.
During the activities, it was proven that the group chewing gum showed better alertness and reduced anxiety and stress. Overall performance was better in the gum-chewing group.
The mechanism underlying this effect is unclear but may be related to cerebral blood flow during chewing gum.
P.S. Chewing gum is also good for your teeth! 🙂
